Well, it’s January again. That means we’ve made it to full-on Pittsburgh winter. With chilly temperatures and all the snow and slush, getting out of the house isn’t at the top of everyone’s to-do list. But let’s be honest, it’s only a matter of time before the cabin fever sets in. Whether you’re a life-long Yinzer or just visiting the Steel City, you might be surprised to learn how many fun winter activities Pittsburgh offers. Keep reading for some fun ideas for keeping the winter blues at bay.

Chill Out with The Penguins

No, we’re not talking about Sid and the boys. We mean literal penguins! Head up to Highland Park to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium to see some of our flippered friends strut their stuff. The penguins take their stroll every Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 am, as long as outdoor temperatures remain below 45 degrees. But hey, cute, little make penguins surely make up for the cold, right?

The parade lasts about 15 minutes, so make sure you arrive early. Because penguins like the cold, the event is subject to cancellation if things warm up. But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of other critters to see at the zoo.

Winter Sports Minutes from Downtown

Take a short trip down the Parkway East to Boyce Park for all the winter recreation you love. Spanning the border of Plum and Monroeville, Boyce Park offer nearly 1,100 acres of outdoor fun. Wintertime is no exception, and this is the only location for downhill skiing and snowtubing in all of Allegheny County.

Looking for something a little less high-maintenance? Boyce Park offers a number of easy hiking trails to help you escape the hustle and bustle of the city and commune with nature. Boyce Park is open year-round from 8am to sunset.

Explore One of Pittsburgh’s (Many) Museums

One of the best things about Pittsburgh is there’s always something new to explore. Whether you’re just visiting, a recent transplant or have lived here your whole life, Pittsburgh has a museum to suit everyone’s tastes. Into art? Try the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland or The Warhol and Mattress factory on the Northside.
